usando mapas de correla{\c{c}}{\~o}es entre as s{\'e}ries
temporais de componentes principais e s{\'e}ries de anomalias
filtradas de algumas vari{\'a}veis, para os per{\'{\i}}odos de
DJF e JJA. O per{\'{\i}}odo de estudo {\'e} de 1979 {\`a}
1995. A {\'a}rea de estudo abrange todas as longitudes por{\'e}m
{\'e} delimitada latitudinalmente pelos paralelos 80šS e 80šN.
An{\'a}lise de vari{\^a}ncias (total, interanual e suas
raz{\~o}es) foram feitas para press{\~a}o ao n{\'{\i}}vel do
mar (PNM), vento zonal em 200 hPa, altura geopotencial em 500 hPa,
radia{\c{c}}{\~a}o de onda longa (ROL), velocidade vertical em
coordenadas de press{\~a}o em 500 hPa, e temperatura em 925 hPa,
e para altura geopotencial em 500 hPa assim{\'e}trico. Estas
an{\'a}lises sugerem que a alta variabilidade nos tr{\'o}picos
est{\'a} relacionada ao ciclo El Niņo-Oscila{\c{c}}{\~a}o Sul
(ENOS). Sazonalidade {\'e} evidente em todos os padr{\~o}es das
vari{\^a}ncias para todas as vari{\'a}veis, com a m{\'a}xima
variabilidade nas latitudes m{\'e}dias e altas do hemisf{\'e}rio
de inverno, exceto para ROL e velocidade vertical. Para essas duas
vari{\'a}veis a variabilidade {\'e} pronunciada nos
tr{\'o}picos e durante o ver{\~a}o do HS. O primeiro modo de PNM
mostra um padr{\~a}o de onda n{\'u}mero um nas regi{\~o}es
tropical e extratropical, que descreve caracter{\'{\i}}sticas
consistentes com os extremos da Oscila{\c{c}}{\~a}o Sul (OS). Os
padr{\~o}es de correla{\c{c}}{\~a}o para as outras
vari{\'a}veis mostram diferen{\c{c}}as sazonais possivelmente
relacionadas a {\'e}poca que se estabelecem os est{\'a}gios
ENOS. As caracter{\'{\i}}sticas mais importantes est{\~a}o
relacionadas ao padr{\~a}o do tipo trem de ondas encontrado nos
campos totais e assim{\'e}tricos de correla{\c{c}}{\~a}o da
componente zonal do vento em 200 hPa e da altura geopotencial em
500 hPa. Em DJF notam-se, para a componente assim{\'e}trica
destas vari{\'a}veis, padr{\~o}es de trem de ondas na
regi{\~a}o do Atl{\^a}ntico/{\'A}frica. Em JJA observa-se um
padr{\~a}o de trem de ondas para o vento zonal assim{\'e}trico
no Pac{\'{\i}}fico Sul. Estas caracter{\'{\i}}sticas n{\~a}o
s{\~a}o observadas nos correspondentes campos totais. As
caracter{\'{\i}}sticas distintas para os padr{\~o}es
atmosf{\'e}ricos de campos totais e assim{\'e}tricos do vento
zonal em 200 hPa e altura geopotencial em 500 hPa, sugerem que
possivelmente a parte assim{\'e}trica dessas vari{\'a}veis
desempenha papel importante nas intera{\c{c}}{\~o}es das
circula{\c{c}}{\~o}es tropical e extratropical. ABSTRACT:
Interannual variability of total and zonally asymmetric
atmospheric fields is studied through analyses of variances and
Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) patterns as well as using
correlation maps between principal component time series and
filtered anomalous time series of some variables for DJF and JJA
periods. The period of study spans from 1979 to 1995. The domain
of the study covers all longitudes but it is latitudinally
limitated by the parallels 80šS and 80šN. Variance analyses
(total, interannual and their ratios) were done for the total sea
level pressure (SLP), zonal wind at 200 hPa, geopotential height
at 500 hPa, vertical velocity in pressure coordinates at 500 hPa,
outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) and temperature at 925 hPa and
for asymmetric geopotential height at 500 hPa. These analyses
suggest that the high variability in the tropics is related to El
Niņo-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle. Seasonality is evident in
the variance patterns for all variables, with the highest
variability in middle and high latitudes of the winter hemisphere,
except for OLR and vertical velocity. For these two variables,
highest variability was seen in the tropics and during the austral
summer. The first mode of the SLP shows a wavenumber one pattern
in the tropical and extratropical regions, which describes
features consistent with the extremes in the Southern Oscillation
(SO). The correlation patterns for the other variables show
seasonal differences possibly related to the periods when the
extremes in the SO occur. The most important features are related
to wave train pattern found for the total and asymmetric
correlation fields of zonal wind at 200 hPa and geopotential
height at 500 hPa. In DJF, the asymmetric of these variables show
a wave train pattern in Atlantic/Africa region. In JJA wave
pattern for asymmetric zonal wind at 200 hPa in the South Pacific
is observed. The distinct features of the atmospheric patterns of
asymmetric and total fields of zonal wind at 200 hPa and
geopotential height at 500 hPa, suggest that possibly the
asymmetric part of these variables plays an important role in the
interactions of extratropical and tropical circulations.",
